Company Background

Pioneering sustainable, high-performance green homes in Connecticut and New York since 1998

About BPC Green Builders

Founded in 1998 by brothers Mike and Chris Trolle, BPC Green Builders was one of the very first builders in Connecticut to specialize in high-performance, sustainable green homes. Now a worker-owned cooperative, BPC is widely recognized as the leading custom green builder in Connecticut and adjoining areas of New York State, having completed 69 of the highest-performing and most energy-efficient custom home projects in New England, including 42 new homes and 27 deep energy renovations.

The Edgecraft Philosophy

BPC’s approach, called Edgecraft, fuses bleeding-edge building science with meticulous craftsmanship. This means designing vapor, thermal, and air barriers that align visually, creating mechanical systems that are both efficient and predictably comfortable, and selecting healthy, durable materials that support family well-being. At BPC, it’s not enough for a home to test well in performance metrics—it also has to feel right, look right, and last for generations.

Deep Energy Retrofit Expertise

BPC transforms existing houses into homes that provide similar high-performance benefits to new construction through Deep Green Retrofitting. This process involves changes to the home’s envelope, heating, cooling, ventilation, and hot water system upgrades, plus the use of green building materials throughout. BPC offers no-cost evaluations of your existing home’s potential for a green retrofit, providing guidance on certification standards so you can set the right goals for energy efficiency, sustainability, health, and comfort.

Award-Winning Certifications

BPC homes meet or exceed established green building certification requirements that far surpass local building codes. The company has pioneered adoption of programs including Energy Star, LEED for Homes, DOE Zero Energy Ready, and PHIUS Passive House. In 2015, a BPC faculty home for the Taft School won the top national award from the USGBC. Their commitment to staying on the cutting edge extends to using building materials with less embodied carbon and natural plant-based materials that act as carbon sinks.

Energy Efficient Retrofit Questions

Essential information about deep green retrofits and whole house renovations

What is a deep energy retrofit and why choose BPC Green Builders?

A deep energy retrofit transforms an existing home into a high-performance green home through comprehensive envelope improvements, HVAC upgrades, and sustainable material selections. BPC Green Builders has completed 27 deep energy retrofits over 25+ years, making them Connecticut’s most experienced green retrofit specialists. Their Edgecraft approach combines cutting-edge building science with meticulous craftsmanship to deliver homes that are energy efficient, comfortable, healthy, and built to last generations.

Can my existing home be converted into a certified green home?

The primary requirement is whether your home’s “envelope” (walls, floors, foundation, and ceilings separating conditioned from unconditioned spaces) can be reconfigured cost-effectively. BPC offers no-cost evaluations of your home’s green potential and will discuss the type and magnitude of renovations needed to meet your goals for energy efficiency, sustainability, health, air quality, and durability.

What certifications can a BPC retrofit achieve?

Depending on your home and goals, BPC retrofits can achieve certifications including Energy Star, DOE Zero Energy Ready, PHIUS Passive House, LEED for Homes, and National Green Building Standard. BPC was among the first builders in Connecticut to achieve each of these certifications and can guide you on which standards are appropriate and achievable for your specific home.

Should I combine a retrofit with a whole house renovation?

Yes, undertaking a deep green retrofit is the ideal time to renovate your entire home, and vice versa. Because of overlaps in what is done for each, combining a whole house renovation with a deep green energy retrofit reduces costs, duplication of effort, waste, time, and money compared to approaching them as separate projects. BPC specializes in integrating both for maximum efficiency and value.

What makes BPC different from other contractors?

BPC Green Builders is a worker-owned cooperative with over 25 years specializing exclusively in high-performance green building. Their team includes certified Passive House consultants, HERS raters, and engineers with specialized training in building science. They’ve pioneered adoption of the strictest green building standards in Connecticut, won national awards including the USGBC’s top honor, and maintain a commitment to using low-embodied-carbon and natural plant-based materials.
